There are many reasons to learn a language and at Ů, the possibilities are endless!
At Year 7, students will have the opportunity to explore languages through our 'taster program,' where they will spend a term each learning Arabic, French, Japanese and Italian. This provides students a great insight into what language they would like to explore further in Year 8, and possibly beyond.
At VCE level, we also offer Auslan as a language option.

2024 Italy trip
During 2024, 17 of our Years 10-12 students were fortunate to travel to Italy as part of a Ů languages trip, along with three teachers and three parents.
This marked our first student exchange trip since COVID, with plans already underway for future overseas travel!
Key organiser Carla Stevens, our Italian teacher, and Ů Manager Lisa Kerr worked closely with the Greater Shepparton City Council’s Economic Development team, who generously arranged gift bags for our students to present to their host families. These bags included First Nations artworks, local merchandise, and reading materials showcasing our vibrant agricultural and farming region. A heartfelt thank-you to Council for their support.
We also thank Ms Stevens, Lisa Rowe, Francesca Rivetti, and the entire team who worked hard fundraising to make the trip possible. This included the assistance of the students themselves, as well as our Environmental Student Leaders who raised money through the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme.
For most of the students, this was their first overseas trip. Ms Stevens said exchange programs offer an incredible opportunity for students to apply their Italian language skills in real-world contexts while gaining firsthand experience of the culture they’ve studied.
Throughout their trip students spent:
- One week at their sister school in La Spezia
- Visited Venice, with its gondola rides and rich traditions
- Took a trip to snow in the Alps
- Explored local craftsmanship in leather, jewellery, masks and lace
- Checked out charming Christmas villages and;
- Stopped by historical sites in Rome, Pompeii, and Florence
Additionally, students engaged in a geographical and cultural project, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration between cities to strengthen our partnerships for the future.
Our Italian students acted as language ambassadors, helping their peers navigate the language and culture, while the Auslan students had the opportunity to explore Italian sign language and share their experiences with Italian students.
We look forward to hosting Italian students here in September 2025 as a gesture of goodwill.
