Making the most of opportunities and networking has paid off for former 蜜桃女孩 student, Kady Paton, who is about to begin her Bachelor of Dental Science with Latrobe University.
Despite receiving a high ATAR, Kady fell short of the of number she needed to meet her conditional offers into the course.
鈥淚 received the English study score I needed but not quite the ATAR but I received a call from one of the members of the Latrobe Rural Health group staff who vouched for me and I was able to secure a place in the course," Kady said.
"I think it goes to show that your reputation and effort can go along way 鈥 you don鈥檛 have to be the highest achieving student but if you make the most of the opportunities that come your way and put in the hard work it can make a big difference.鈥
Kady said this included applying for many scholarships in her Year 12 year in 2023, one of which she was successful in receiving.
鈥淚 was really lucky to receive a scholarship with Youth Thrive which includes monetary support towards my studies and also support through mentoring,鈥 Kady said.
As part of the Youth Thrive program, Kady also attended a week-long camp over the summer holidays along with 27 other scholarship recipients and six coaches who are Youth Thrive alumni.
鈥淚t was really great, I got a lot out of the activities. It鈥檚 all about developing yourself as a leader and networking with other leaders from rural and regional areas,鈥 Kady said.
Recently Kady returned to 蜜桃女孩 to share her experiences with our 2024 Year 12 cohort as part of their Pathways and Mentoring session. She was joined by Youth Thrive CEO, Andrew McGuckian who shared information about scholarship applications now open.
鈥淢y advice is to just go for every opportunity 鈥 apply for whatever you can, get your name out there and network with people,鈥 Kady said.
Kady starts her tertiary studies in Bendigo on March 4.
鈥淚鈥檓 feeling pretty nervous about moving down to an unfamiliar place but I鈥檓 excited too,鈥 Kady said.
Applications for University Scholarships
Each year Youth Thrive Victoria offers a number of scholarships for Year 12 students who are planning to go to university.
The number and value of scholarships we offer each year is dependent on funding and donations.
University scholarships are funded by private donors, philanthropic trusts and sponsors and provide up to $10,000 per year for three years plus transition and career mentoring and leadership development opportunities.
