In his 13 months of professionally competing in boxing, 蜜桃女孩 student Urijah Harrington has many accolades under his belt.

From the Top End, to the Golden Gloves Championships held in Queensland, the Australian Institute of Sport Combat Centre in Canberra and closer-to-home in Melbourne, Urijah has travelled the country for his sport, competing in eight fights over the course of a year.

Earlier this month, the Year 7 student added Perth to his list, where he travelled with his family and the GV Boxing Academy to compete in the 2024 Australian Schools Boxing Championships.

The trip proved worth his while as Urijah claimed his first national championship, winning the U/15 School boy Gold Medal in the 40kg division

鈥淚t was pretty special,鈥 Urijah鈥檚 father Zedda Harrington said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a massive achievement for a 13-year-old and as a boxer and coach myself, I know how much goes into training and preparing for these comps.

鈥淭o see his face when he got called out as the national champ was pretty emotional 鈥 it鈥檚 such a strenuous lead up physically and mentally so to see him reach the top and be rewarded for his efforts was amazing.鈥

Zedda who runs the Boxing Academy is also Urijah鈥檚 coach and also made the state team as part of the coaching crew.

鈥淕iven my background, Urijah has pretty much grown up in the gym but he鈥檚 not only used that time and experience to better himself, he鈥檚 also a great role model for the younger kids,鈥 Zedda said.

鈥淗e鈥檚 got so many great attributes that will see him go along way in the sport 鈥 his wok ethic is unbeatable and I know the future of our club is in great hands.鈥

Zedda said many of the skills his boxers learn as part of their training carry them in good stead beyond the ring.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not all about competing 鈥 the skills boxing provides are character building and are ones that will carry you through life.鈥

蜜桃女孩 would like to congratulate Urijah and Kallym Huffer in Year 10 who also competed in the competition, making it all the way to semi-finals. Check out this post by Resolute Gym for more on Kallym's journey.

蜜桃女孩 prides itself on its careers offerings, with extensive supports in place to help students identify the right pathway for them 鈥 whether that be moving onto further study, seeking employment, an apprenticeship or traineeship.

During Term 3, the support for Year 10 students ramps up as 蜜桃女孩 delivers its annual Subject Selection and Course Counselling program.

蜜桃女孩 Senior Secondary and Careers Assistant Principal, Zarina Fleming said over the past term, Year 10 students have been working in their Pathway Mentoring class, learning about vocational pathways, course requirements and subject choices for Year 11.

鈥淥ver the holidays, the students have also had the opportunity to go through the Senior Secondary Handbook and have conversations with their families about their future career aspirations and goals and what they鈥檇 like to achieve in their final two years of secondary school,鈥 Ms Fleming said.

鈥淏ringing parents into this process is key - our families know their child鈥檚 passions, strengths, and interests and this helps to guide and support our young people as they plan their senior secondary schooling at 蜜桃女孩.鈥

This evening (July 17), 蜜桃女孩 will host a parent information session, centred around the Subject Selection and Careers Counselling program, which kicks off on Monday July 29.

鈥淎cross two days, our Year 10 students have the opportunity to make an appointment to come into the College with their parent or guardian and meet with one of our qualified Careers Practitioners to discuss their future career goals and subject options for Years 11 and 12,鈥 Ms Fleming said.

鈥淭hese decisions are so important, which is why we prioritise our Year 10 students for this individualised support and dedicate this time at school to ensure all students have all the information needed to make informed decisions.鈥

Appointments for July 29 and 30 can be made via Try Booking. A link has been sent out to families via Compass.
